Live Tornado Tracker: how to track tornadoes in real time
A working storm chaser's guide to live tornado tracking — what data sources actually matter, how to read them under pressure, and how to stay on the right side of a rotating storm.
What 'live tornado tracker' actually means
A live tornado tracker isn't a single magical map that shows tornadoes as dots moving across the country. Tornadoes are short-lived, often rain-wrapped, and only confirmed in real time when a trained spotter, a chaser on the ground, or a radar signature catches them. Tracking a tornado live means stitching together four data layers as fast as they update: NEXRAD radar, official NWS tornado warnings, SPC mesoanalysis, and verified field reports.
Apps that promise a perfect real-time tornado dot are either delayed by 5–15 minutes or are showing inferred rotation, not a confirmed tornado. The honest goal is faster, better-grounded situational awareness — not certainty.
The core live data feeds
Every credible tornado tracker is built on the same public feeds. If a tool doesn't cite them, treat it as entertainment, not intelligence.
- NEXRAD Level II/III radar — the National Weather Service's network of ~160 Doppler radars. Updates every 1–5 minutes depending on volume coverage pattern. This is where rotation, debris signatures, and storm structure live.
- NWS warnings & watches API — official tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado watches, and PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) wording. Authoritative. Always overrides interpretation.
- SPC mesoanalysis & Day 1 outlook — Storm Prediction Center fields like effective bulk shear, 0–1 km storm-relative helicity, SCP, and STP. Tells you whether the environment can still produce tornadoes, not just whether one already exists.
- MRMS rotation tracks — Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor azimuthal shear and rotation track products. Useful for "did something just spin up there?" when warnings lag.
- Spotter and chaser reports — LSRs (Local Storm Reports), trained-spotter relays, and verified chaser livestreams. The only way to confirm a tornado is on the ground.
Reading radar in real time
For live tornado tracking, two radar products matter most:
- Reflectivity shows precipitation intensity. Watch for the classic supercell hook echo on the rear-right flank of a moving storm, and for inflow notches that mark the storm's updraft region.
- Base velocity shows wind toward (green) and away from (red) the radar. A tight green/red couplet on the inflow side of a supercell is a rotation signature. Co-located with a hook, that's a tornado-warned storm.
If you see a Tornado Debris Signature (TDS) — correlation coefficient dropping below ~0.8 inside the rotation couplet — that's debris in the air being scanned by the radar. It is, in practice, a radar-confirmed tornado.
Radar latency is the biggest gotcha. A scan you're looking at is already 1–5 minutes old by the time it renders. A tornado moving at 40 mph has covered ~2 miles in that window. Always assume the real storm is downwind of where the radar shows it.
Warnings vs. watches vs. PDS
These three words get used interchangeably and shouldn't be.
- Tornado Watch — conditions are favorable for tornadoes across a region for the next several hours. Issued by SPC. Polygon covers many counties.
- Tornado Warning — a tornado has been reported or is indicated by radar in a specific polygon. Issued by your local NWS office. Take cover immediately if you're inside it.
- PDS Tornado Watch/Warning — Particularly Dangerous Situation. Reserved for outbreaks with strong/violent tornado potential. Treat as a different threat tier.
- Tornado Emergency — the highest NWS wording. Confirmed large/violent tornado approaching a populated area. Shelter now.
A live tornado tracker that doesn't surface PDS and Tornado Emergency language separately is flattening the most important signal in the feed.
Verified chaser reports
Reports are the ground truth that radar can't give you. Two principles:
- Trust source over speed. A trained-spotter relay or a verified chaser livestream beats an unsourced social post by an order of magnitude, even if the social post is 30 seconds faster.
- Multiple independent reports beat one loud one. Confirmation bias rips through chase social media on outbreak days. Two independent geolocated reports of the same feature are signal; one viral clip is noise.
Tracking is not chasing — safety rules
Watching a tornado on a screen and intercepting one on the road are different sports. If you're tracking from home: respect warnings the moment your polygon goes red — get to an interior room on the lowest floor and stay off windows. If you're in the field:
- Always know your escape route before you commit to a position.
- Stay on the right-rear (south/east) flank of a typical northeast-moving supercell.
- Never park under power lines or trees. Hail destroys cars; flying debris kills people.
- Recheck storm motion every 10–15 minutes — deviant right-movers change the safe side fast.
- If visibility drops in rain-wrapped circulation, you've already made a positioning mistake. Disengage.
