What a Mesoscale Discussion actually is

A Mesoscale Discussion — or MD — is a short-form forecast product issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. It is the closest thing operational meteorology has to a forecaster thinking out loud in real time.

The "mesoscale" part matters. While a Day 1 outlook covers the whole country and looks out 24 hours, an MD zooms way in. It typically covers a polygon a few hundred miles across and a time window of the next 1–3 hours. It is the SPC saying: "Here is the very specific area we think is about to do something. Here is why. Here is whether we expect a watch to come out of it."

Every MD contains the same building blocks:

  • A small polygon drawn over the area of concern
  • The product type (severe thunderstorm, tornado, winter, fire weather, heavy rain)
  • A short discussion of the meteorological reasoning
  • A statement of watch probability (likely / possible / unlikely)
  • The threats expected — tornado, damaging wind, large hail, flash flooding
  • A valid-until time

Why chasers read MDs before anything else

For a chaser sitting at a gas station in western Oklahoma, the MD is a different kind of signal than the outlook. The outlook tells you the day has potential. The MD tells you the trigger is about to pull.

By the time a tornado watch is issued, the MD has usually already told you:

  • Where on the dryline initiation is most likely
  • Whether storms will be discrete supercells or messy clusters
  • How confident the forecasters are
  • Whether a watch is "likely" (high confidence) or merely "possible"

That lead time — sometimes only 30–60 minutes — is what separates being in position from chasing storms from the back. If you wait for the watch, you have already given up real estate.

How to read an MD fast

When an MD drops, you have maybe two minutes before something matters. Here is the order experienced chasers read them:

  1. Polygon first. Is your target inside it? If not, are you within driving distance of the edge?
  2. Threat line. Tornado / wind / hail probabilities. A tornado-tagged MD with a 70%+ watch probability is the real deal.
  3. Watch likelihood. "Watch likely" means start positioning now. "Watch possible" means stay flexible.
  4. Mode discussion. Look for words like discrete, cellular, linear, clustering. Discrete supercells are the gold standard for photogenic tornadoes.
  5. Valid time. A 90-minute MD means initiation should happen inside that window — not later.

The lifecycle: MD to watch to warning

Most severe weather days follow a predictable rhythm of SPC products:

  1. Day 1 Outlook (0600 UTC and updated through the day) — the big picture
  2. Mesoscale Discussion (1–3 hours before initiation) — the zoom-in
  3. Watch (issued by SPC) — formal heads-up to the public, ~4–8 hour window
  4. Warning (issued by local NWS office) — tornado is occurring or imminent
  5. Local Storm Reports — what actually happened

Each step is more precise and more urgent. An MD is the inflection point between forecast and operations.

A worked example

Imagine it's 2:45 PM in Woodward, Oklahoma. Your morning model run pointed at the dryline. The 1630 UTC SPC update keeps a 10% hatched tornado area centered overhead. You've been sitting at a Loves for 90 minutes.

At 2:51, MD #1734 drops. The polygon covers your county. Watch probability: 80%. Threats: tornadoes, very large hail. Discussion: "Discrete supercells expected by 21Z along the surface dryline... environment supports strong tornadoes."

That MD is your cue. You don't wait for the watch. You don't wait for a tower to go up on visible satellite. You start moving toward the southern end of the polygon — the tail of the dryline, where the first cell usually fires. Twenty-three minutes later the tornado watch is issued and your target storm is already a feature.

That is the entire reason MDs exist as a public product.

Common mistakes

  • Treating an MD as a watch. It is a heads-up. The watch may still not come.
  • Ignoring the watch probability number. "Possible" and "likely" mean very different things.
  • Reading only the polygon. The discussion text usually contains the most useful nuance — mode, timing, key boundaries.
  • Missing the time window. A 1Z–4Z MD is not telling you to chase right now; it's setting up an evening play.
